Measuring your horse…

Horse rugs must fit perfectly and hug your horse’s body shape. A rug that is too tight or too loose will irritate your horse creating unsightly rub marks around the shoulders, withers and hips. Equest rugs are designed to move with your horse, negating these common problems.

Care must be taken to measure your horse correctly to provide the best fitting rug. Before the purchase of a new rug, horses should be measured, as horses constantly change shape with work and feed levels. The Equest rug range is designed in 3-inch intervals, measured from the centre of the chest of the horse around in a straight line to the longest point of the horse’s rump. The following table is provided for your convenience to convert your horse’s measurements into the most appropriate rug size.

Fitting an Equest Horse Rug

Step 1

Gently lift the rug and place the rug forward on the horse’s shoulders, then slide the rug back until the neckline falls along the line of the horse’s shoulders. Equest rugs are designed to cup not pull on the horse’s shoulders.

Step 2

Now, fasten the leg straps located at the back of the horse rug. Pass the left leg strap between the hind legs and fasten back to the D-ring on the left-hand side. Now, thread the right leg strap between the legs, making sure it also passes through the left leg strap, then fasten it back to the D-ring on the right-hand side. It’s important that you follow this procedure exactly to ensure the rug/blanket stays in place. Ensure the leg straps are correctly adjusted, so that there is a hand’s width between the leg strap and the horse’s thigh. This allows freedom of movement.

Step 3

Move to the front of the horse and buckle the front straps of the rug. The buckles are to be adjusted to allow four fingers between the rug and the horse’s chest. If the front buckles are too tight this will cause rubbing on the withers and shoulders. If the front buckles are too loose the rug with slip backwards and become dangerous when the horse lays down.

Step 4

Lastly fasten the surcingles of the rug. Fastening the front surcingle to the back clasp and the back surcingle to the front clasp. The surcingles should make a cross underneath the horse’s belly. The surcingles should be adjusted to allow one hand width between the horse belly and the strap. If the surcingles are too loose, your horse may accidentally get a leg caught when rolling or sleeping causing leg injuries.

Your horse is now ready to enjoy the new Equest rug safely.
